3 Year Old Treated for Alcoholism in England

posted 03:47 AM EST, Mon March 21, 2011

In an extreme case of collateral damage from the UK’s culture of binge drinking, a 3 year old child was admitted to a West Midlands hospital sometime between 2008 and 2010 for alcohol dependency.

A 3 year old child suffering from alcohol withdrawal symptoms which included shakes and mood swings was recently treated for alcoholism at a West Midlands England Hospital (the youngest of 13 children under the age of 12 who had been diagnosed as alcoholics by the National Health Service (NHS) between 2008 and 2010.)

Identity information and more specific details of the toddler’s condition are protected under privacy laws.  Journalists discovered the shocking case under freedom of information laws on alcohol admission statistics.

An NHS spokeswoman declined to comment on the specifics of the case, but said, "We treat alcohol abuse very seriously, and have specialist teams and experts on hand who are there to treat young patients with alcohol-related problems."
