I'm having a really hard time with marijuana withdrawals. I am anxious and restless and I haven't slept in 2 days and I keep crying for no real reason at all. I no it won't last forever but I have tried to quit so many times over the last 10 years and I never have been able to and now I am really motivated to make it through. Should I take valium for a week or 2 to help me relax and then make sure to stop using it before I get addicted? This is what is recommended on some marijuana addiction support forums but I just wanted to get an expert opinion on it before taking another thing that is also addictive to get over the first addiction.
Dr. Stuart Shipko Says...
In a word: no. You will end up dependent on the Valium, which is a much more difficult withdrawal than the marijuana. Even after only a week or two you can end up with a new dependency. With pot, a lot of the withdrawal relates to external cues, such as smoking as soon as you get home from work, or smoking when you face some sort of stress. To combat this, you might find a Marijuana Anonymous group and get a sponsor, or to avoid stoner friends.
Not easy, I realize, but you don't want to jump out of the frying pan and into the fire.
