If I want to make a Xanax tapering plan is it better for me to gradually reduce the dosage I am taking or to gradually lengthen the interval between doses; or maybe some combination of the two. As a practical matter, it seems easier to lengthen the intervals, because when I start splitting up pills I am always left with pills that are never exactly equal and then it’s just guess work about how much I am really taking.

Dr. Stuart Shipko Says...

In tapering Xanax, there is not a single best way to lower the dosage, and it needs to be individualized.  Some patients do better with increasing the interval between doses and some patients do better with dose reduction, or a combination of the two.  It is a matter of trial and error.  You need not be concerned if the pills are not split exactly even; it all averages out at the end of the day.  There are other tips on how to taper in my eBook 'Xanax Withdrawal.' When tapering Xanax, flexibility in the dosing is important and fewer patients are able to work within a rigid schedule.
