For more than 100 years this hospital has been dedicated to providing cutting edge medical and psychiatric needs.
The building Lakeland Behavioral Health System now occupies was originally built by the Springfield Hospital Association and Training School for Nurses in 1904. Its original name was Springfield Hospital and was the first training facility for nurses in Springfield. The facility opened for patients on January 1, 1905.
In 1998 Lakeland eliminated its adult psychiatric treatment programs to devote the organization's resources and energy to providing services for children and adolescents.
At Lakeland we have developed a series of specialized treatment tracks that will help us reach our goal of providing compassionate, results-based care for all of our patients and residents.
Adolescent Acute Care Program
This inpatient psychiatric treatment program is designed to help manage adolescent crisis situations. Those children and adolescents who are not properly functioning in aspects of everyday life usually benefit most from a more restrictive setting like the one offered at Lakeland. Each acute care program is individualized to each patient and includes individual psychotherapy, group sessions focusing on a number of different topics, and family therapy.
Adolescent Residential Program
The purpose of our residential program is to provide a therapeutic environment that will assist the resident in enhancing family, relational, educational, and social functioning, while at the same time developing adequate age-appropriate coping skills. The ultimate goal for treatment is to successfully reintegrate the resident into the community. This program is also individualized to each patient including individual psychotherapy, group sessions focusing on a number of different topics, and family therapy.
Older adult and Senior Program
HOPE is our adult psychiatric inpatient program that is designed to treat acute mental health disorders for adults age 65 and over. In this program we will provide confidential, personalized treatment utilizing a multidisciplinary approach. This includes participation in group therapy, individual therapy, and activity therapy. Patients and families will receive education on specific disorders, medications, and effective coping strategies. The overall goal of our program is to relieve symptoms, return patients to their best possible level of health and maximize their quality of life.
Lakeland Regional School
Students enrolled in LRS attend five classes per day with instruction in the core areas of English, mathematics, science and social studies in addition to physical education. Both individually and as a team, LRS teachers are committed to assisting each student to make sizable academic gains – tailored to individual needs – during his/her stay at Lakeland Behavioral Health. Emphasis in this school program is placed on each youngster's success while at Lakeland Regional School. Of greater significance, however, is their ability to perform upon leaving Lakeland in a manner that will enable them to be recognized as positive, contributing members of society.
Military Family Program
Lakeland Behavioral Health System is certified by TRICARE, the health care program specifically for the families and survivors for active duty and retired members of uniformed services.
In addition to the wide variety of therapeutic approaches we offer at Lakeland we provide our patients with experiential programs that will help enhance the overall healing process. Some of these include:
Family participation in our adolescent program is a big part of the healing process here at Lakeland and parents of children patients are expected to fully engage in the whole treatment process from the initial intake assessment to the last discharge planning meeting.
Family members will receive education about their child's disorder, any medication needs, and specific coping strategies that have been learned. In addition to therapy, family members are allowed to visit for up to an hour each day.
In addition to our adolescent program, family involvement is a vital part of the older adults program as well. Patients and their families will receive education on specific disorders, medications, and effective coping strategies. Family and friends of patients are allowed to visit daily up to one hour between the hours of 9am and 6pm.
